The M54 engine came equipped with two different style coils, Bolt-In or Pencil style, depending on the build date. Due to the difference of the coils the valve cover also differs for Bolt-In or Pencil style coils. Additionally the different coils use different style electrical connectors and therefore different ignition coil wire harnesses. Furthermore, the DME version change from MS43 to MS45 resulted in yet an additional ignition coil wire harness. Besides the different style coil connector, the 2-pin power and ground connector of the ignition coil wire harness varies depending on which version of the ignition coil wire harness it is.
Variations: Build Date Range – Ignition Coil Type – Wire Harness Identifier

- From 09/2002, Up To 03/2003 – MS43 – Pencil Coils – White 2-pin Connector with Flat Pins (this item)

Summary:
- E46 Rear Wheel Drive 325 or 330: Bolt-In style coils will always be an MS43 DME. MS45 DME’s will always have Pencil style coils, however since some MS43’s came equipped with Pencil style coils they are not “MS45 Coils” as some people call them, and therefore the Pencil style coils are legal within SE46. You do not need to convert to the Bolt-In style coils when doing an MS45 to MS43 conversion. This item is the correct OE Ignition Coil Wire Harness to use with Pencil style coils with an MS43 DME.
Notes:
– The 2-pin Connector referenced above on the Ignition Coil Wire Harness plugs into the Transmission Wire Harness which you will also need the correct corresponding Transmission Wire Harness when converting from MS45 to MS43 or possibly an adapter from Bolt-In style coils to Pencil style coils with an MS43 DME.
– These wire harnesses are used in good visual condition, but untested aside from a quick continuity check.
